Me as a kid, set up in

Mom’s favorite pose.

My Story

When I was a kid, I was surrounded by books and people who loved to read them. Fantasy, mystery, memoir, history, philosophy, religion, art, cookbooks, comics -- there was nothing my family didn’t read. We also had subscriptions to three different newspapers, because no two contained all the necessary cartoons and crossword puzzles.

We had a large blackboard in the kitchen. When my brothers and I came downstairs to breakfast, we would often find a long algebra problem or an Ogden Nash poem scrawled on the board in colorful chalk.

My earliest memories are curling up with my mother in her big black vinyl recliner with a stack of books. She read to me, I read to her,and she told me I was the most brilliant girl in the world.

My Mother of Blessed Memory

My mother, Adele McDaniel, believed that literacy is the key to a successful future. And she thought that everyone deserves to succeed. She was a physicist and worked full time, but when we were grown and too big to curl up with her on the black recliner, she started volunteering to help underprivileged children read.

Mom passed away this summer. I just returned from helping clean out her house. As always, there were books spilling over tables, chairs and beds. Bookshelves stood in every room and hallway, with collections of poetry, magazines and comics stacked in the bathrooms. And that was all in addition to the wall-to-wall library upstairs.

The Cause

Today I am a high school English teacher in Israel. Many of my students don’t read for fun in Hebrew, not to mention English. According to The Marker, nine out of ten Israeli applicants for jobs in high tech don’t have the basic skills for the industry. Often, companies farm these jobs out of the country.

Many of my students work hard and get good enough grades, but they leave high school ill-prepared to use English in the world. For most of them, English is a school subject, not a language. You go to class, you do the homework, you take a test, you write a book report. I want my students to love English. I want them to read books because it’s fun, because it can transport you to new worlds, and because reading makes us more compassionate and critical thinkers.

In my mother’s memory, I am raising funds to revolutionize the reading culture in my school. I plan to kick off the year with a reading festival, including popular new books for the library, bookmark craft tables, a scavenger hunt with a raffle for bookstore gift cards, and an ice cream for every student who finishes reading a book. I hope to set up reading corners and lay out blankets on the grass, with volunteers reading in small groups to students who need help.

In addition, I’d like to hang inspirational reading posters in the classrooms and hallways, and to create reading corners in every building with magazine racks full of a variety of magazines and newspapers for kids to peruse during breaks. My hope is that kids will find themselves reading outside the classroom, in their free time, for fun. We will also use sets of the magazines for our Electives program, where students study a variety of subjects including current events, history, culture and sports in English.

How You Can Help

  • Finally, I would appreciate it if you spread the word to friends, family colleagues, and anyone who may be interested in helping.

Thanks so much for your support!
